Language Lead - (Arabic and RTL User Experience)

  • Translate, review and proofread WhatsApp UI strings, Support, Marketing, PR and Legal content for Arabic
  • Review all UI, Marketing and Legal content translated by the vendor for new launches and existing products
  • Act as the quality gatekeeper, voice and market ambassador for Arabic
  • Be a point of contact for other stakeholders in the company for localization and user experience of all right-to-left languages supported by WhatsApp (Arabic, Persian, Urdu, Hebrew)
  • Develop and maintain key relationships with vendor linguists
  • Regularly communicate with them to align and calibrate language, style and terminology for Arabic
  • Clarify quality expectations and maintain/tweak quality control processes with the vendor to ensure the best user experience for all right-to-left languages supported by WhatsApp
  • Thoroughly QA all localized content and apps to ensure consistent messaging and proper functionality for Arabic
  • Lead and oversee the overall Linguistic QA testing for all right-to-left language supported by WhatsApp (Arabic, Persian, Urdu, Hebrew), guiding other linguists and testers to look for and flag right-to-left language specific issues and provide suggested solutions
  • Coordinate creation and maintenance of linguistic assets (TMs, glossaries, style guides, reference material) for Arabic and provide detailed guidelines for all other linguists working on right-to-left languages
  • Communicate efficiently with product managers, localization project managers and the customer operation team to align with project requirements and quality standards
  • Provide inputs on UI, UX and design for products launching in international markets
  • Identify and fix linguistic and cultural issues before launch
  • Perform research on current industry standards and do comparative analysis of competitor products related to the language and user experience for right-to-left languages
  • Identify areas of improvements for the overall bidirectional user experience and champion them to engineering, product and design teams
  • Remain curious about the WhatsApp usage and style that works best in the target market
  • Remain confident that you have the network and research ability to satisfy this curiosity

Minimum Qualification

  • WhatsApp user, and experience with other messaging and social media mobile app
  • 3+ years of experience in software localization or translation/review for companies
  • Fluency and education in Arabic (writing, reading, speaking)
  • Demonstrated knowledge of internationalization and localization practices and standards and best practices specific to right-to-left languages
  • BA/BS or equivalent degree from another country
  • Proven track record of translation and localization experience
  • Experience with solving challenges it pertains to language and UX nuances that convey company's message on a local level and ensure the best user experience for right-to-left languages
  • Experience in explaining linguistic challenges and cultural questions and concepts to stakeholders
  • Experience with prioritizing and managing multiple projects simultaneously in the face of deadlines
  • Experience with localization platforms, file formats and CAT tools that manage and/or automate the translation workflow
  • Eligible to work in the United States
  • No international relocation

Preferred Qualification

  • M.A. in Translation, Linguistics, or similar field of study
  • 5+ years of relevant experience in software localization, QA testing, Linguistic QA
  • Knowledge with translation, Linguistics, or similar field of study
  • Fluency in Hebrew, Persian, or Urdu
  • Experience in creating, copy-writing or editing in the language of expertise
  • Experience in Localization/QA testing project management
  • Knowledge in software applications
  • A thoughtfully developed sense of humor
